Research

Mari brings her interests in geography, sociology and history, and training in critical anthropology to the study of education. Her work considers three lines of inquiry:

  • African Americans in Northern California during the Great Migration (1910-1970).

  • The impact of educational leaders' decision-making practices on the lives of historically marginalized students in the United States.

  • The preparation and support of equity-minded educational leaders.

What is the Great Migration?

The African American Great Migration is one of the largest human migrations in US history.  It is divided into two waves, the First Wave (1910-1930) and the Second Wave (1940-1970). An estimated 6 million African Americans left the South for the North, Midwest and West during this time.

The Great Migration Study

Mari's latest project is the Great Migration Study. Using surveys, interviews, and document analysis, Mari examines the migration journeys, educational experiences, and racial-spatial rules that governed African American life in Northern California. Like Mari's previous work, the study contributes to the historical record regarding race, space, and education in Northern California.

What is Disproportionate Discipline?

Disproportionate discipline refers to the overrepresentation of students from historically marginalized communities in student discipline. Student discipline takes many forms, including detention, in school suspension, at home suspension, expulsion and removal from school.
